Proximity & cooldown settings
Two settings control when a Music Moment fires: how close you have to get (proximity threshold) and how soon it can fire again (cooldown period). The defaults work well for most runs; this page explains what each one does and when to change it.
What is the proximity threshold?
The proximity threshold is the trigger radius around each Music Moment's pin. When you come within that distance during an active workout, the Moment's song starts. The default is 20 meters, and you can set it anywhere from 5 to 30 meters.
- Widen it (25–30 m) if Moments sometimes fail to fire. GPS naturally drifts a few meters, especially under trees or between buildings — a wider radius absorbs that drift. Also helpful for cycling, where you cross the radius quickly.
- Narrow it (5–10 m) if you want pinpoint precision — for example two Moments close together that should not overlap. The tighter the radius, the more exact your GPS fix has to be.
What is the cooldown period?
The cooldown period is the minimum time before the same Moment can trigger again. The default is 30 seconds, adjustable from 10 to 120 seconds in 10-second steps.
- Raise it if a song restarts when you linger near a pin — for example doing laps past the same spot, or stretching near a Moment. A 120-second cooldown means at least two minutes between repeats.
- Lower it if you pass the same spot repeatedly on purpose (short loops) and want the song each time.
How to change them
- Open the Home tab and tap the gear icon in the top-right.
- The Location Music Settings sheet opens with two sliders: Proximity Threshold (shown in meters) and Cooldown Period (shown in seconds).
- Set each slider, then tap Save. Tapping Cancel — or swiping the sheet down — discards your changes.

Good to know
- Both settings are global — they apply to every route and every Moment, and they persist until you change them.
- You can change them mid-workout; the new values take effect from the next GPS update.
- The cooldown applies per Moment, and it works as a repeat interval: if you stay inside a Moment's radius, its song will start again once each cooldown period passes. If that bothers you — say you stretch near a pin — raise the cooldown toward 120 seconds, or pause the workout while you rest.
